Reading Notes: Arabian Nights, Part B

Arabian Nights, Andrew Lang

The second part of the Arabian Nights unit was all about the story of Aladdin. The story was six parts, drawing out the stories that Sheherazade is telling her husband to convince him not to kill her. At this point, she has prevented her own murder for many many nights, cleverly keeping the king's attention off of what he had intended to do.

This story was nothing like the Aladdin that I and so many others are used to, there are characters missing as well as characters added to basically rewrite the whole story.

I think my biggest disappointment in the Arabian Nights unit is that there wasn't a specific ending to the story of Sheherazade and her king. During storytelling this week, I think I will start off from where the unit leaves and write the ending of the story, whether that be a happy or sad ending. I think there is a lot of freedom that comes with that.
