Week 7 Story

The Battle of the Gazelle and the Antelope

There was once a gazelle that was interested in the daughters of Nanpentro. These daughters were beautiful and many people desired to marry them. Nanpentro was a protective father of these daughters, so he said that only the person that knew their names would be able to marry these daughters. The gazelle asked his loyal dog to help him figure out the names of the daughters. After many times of learning and forgetting the daughters names, the gazelle finally came to Nanpentro with what he wanted. Nanpentro accepted this and gave his daughters over to the gazelle.

The gazelle was genuinely happy. Everything he ever wanted was finally coming true, he would find joy for the rest of his life. On his way home with his new wives and his loyal dog, he ran into an antelope. The antelope had obviously been having a bad day, but when he saw the gazelle’s wives, he was filled with hope. He told the gazelle that he must have at least one of them.

However, after everything the gazelle had been through, he was not about to give up one of his beautiful wives. He told the antelope that he better get away from what belonged to him. After minutes of debating and arguing over what they should do, the antelope finally challenged the gazelle to a duel for the hands of these woman’s marriage.

The antelope may have been larger and better in the duel, but the gazelle was smarter and more determined. They fought for hours but the antelope soon tired out. The gazelle, knowing that the fight would take long, saved his energy until the end and finally overpowered the antelope and won the daughters once and for all.

Authors note: When I read How the Antelope Got Married, I thought the last paragraph only brushed over the fight between the gazelle and antelope. I thought the story of the fight could be as good if not better than the story about him figuring out the daughters names. It could have been all one large journey for him to finally find marriage but they didn’t really talk about the fight.

  1. Hey Morgan! I enjoyed this story! I like that you focused on a part of the story that you thought was glossed over in the original. I did have a question Was Nanpetro a man or another animal? Also, I can’t see the image that you’ve added to this story. I just see a box with a question mark in it, which usually means that there’s something wrong. Maybe you should check your link and try uploading the picture again. Keep up the good work!

  2. Hey Morgan, I liked your story. It moved a little fast for me, and I understand that you wanted to focus more on the fight scene that the original myth glossed over, but I think that adding a few details to the other parts of the story would help the reader. For instance, same question as above: is Nanpetro a man or an animal? Were the wives animals? What's the friendship between the dog and the antelope like? How did the dog help him learn their names?
P.S. I laughed at how the gazelle asked for one of the wives like he was asking the antelope to share a bag of skittles or something. I don't know if it was like this in the original myth, but I thought it was really funny.

  3. Hey Morgan! I really enjoyed this story! I liked how it was short and easy to read. I thought it was a creative idea to save the duel between the two characters until the end of the story. This would be a fun story to continue with. Do the wives and the gazelle live happily ever after or does someone else come in and try to take them? Overall, this was a great story!

  4. Hi Morgan! I really enjoyed reading your story. Your story was very easily to follow along with. I liked how you focused on even though the antelope was larger and stronger, the gazelle was smarter and out played the antelope. I also agree with Braley, it would be cool to see this story continue and further develop the lives of the characters.
